California builds experimental orthotropic plate bridge
To determine potentialities of orthotropic plate-girder design, and to investigate fabrication and erection problems and structural behavior, California Div of Highways has designed short-span bridge employing this type of floor system; structure consists of two 2-span units continuous over their center bents; certain dissimilarities are incorporated in design of units to permit evaluation of different thicknesses of wearing surface, deck plates, and rib plates.
