Europe's and world's longest stiffening-truss bridge for highway and rail traffic, about two miles long, from anchorage to anchorage 7742 ft with central suspension span of 3323 ft and two end-spans of 1586 ft each; seven foundation structures include Pier No. 3, 291 ft above bedrock, with 270 ft of its bulk below high tide, supporting 595-ft-high steel tower; setting record depth, pier was constructed in 11 mo by open caisson air-dome method through 90 ft of water and 180 ft of mud and sand below high tide; American and European firms cooperated on project.
