Three moment equation for variable depth beams
Equation of three moments for continuous beams with variable cross section is presented and applied to computation of bending moments under any case of loading or settlement of supports; influence lines for bending moment or shearing force at any section are directly obtained as deflection lines resulting from suitable unit relative rotation or vertical translation produced at section, or as unit displacement at support; equation provides suitable means for analysis of continuous composite steel and concrete beams in which composite action is only available under positive bending moments during which concrete slab is subjected to compressive stresses.
