Unique prestressed concrete roof
Two Alitalia hangars at Rome airport, including administration and workshop buildings covering 55,000 sq m, have no vertical supporting members to impede movement and storage of aircraft; system of hinged, cantilever roof structure that permits movement with thermal and wind-velocity fluctuations by sliding window units at top of side walls; roof has series of concrete vertical antennas placed along its upper surface; thus roof can be supported by cables attached to its extremities; high quality concrete of calcareous gravel and river sand with minimum acceptable strength of 450 kg/sq cm although maximum compression adapted was 150 kg/sq cm poured by trained workers; plastic sheathing for covering steel rods used in positioning forms made rod extraction easier after concrete had set; Morandi system of prestressing was used, with maximum load of 9000 kg /sq cm in beam; cable tension did not exceed 8000 kg/sq cm.
