Zuyder Zee reclamation works; Medemblik pumping station
May 23: Completion of first step in great scheme by which over half million acres will be added to arable area of Netherlands was made probability for this year, by opening of two pumping stations of new northwest polder of Zuyder Zee; present article describes pumping station at Medemblik, together with its ancillary works. June 13: Construction of embankment; connection between original canal system and that of enclosure through storage lake is by means of lock at De Haukes, constructed to accommodate vessels of 300 metrical tons, having chamber 132 ft. long with width of 23 ft. June 27: Work in progress for enclosing and subsequent draining of Zuyder Zee; 15 sluices are arranged in three groups of five each; each group rests upon continuous raft of reinforced concrete measuring 289 ft. by 164 ft. with distance between adjacent rafts of 289 ft.; sluices are crossed by two reinforced-concrete bridges.
