A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
While development of stressmeter was begun at Postgraduate School in Mining of Sheffield University primarily in relation to mining industry problems of stress changes in rocks, device is proving to have other applications, particularly for determination of stress changes in civil engineering earthworks and structures, and in reinforced concrete construction; hollow glass cylinder has light source and circularly polarizing screen at one end; birefringence in gage, identifies ambient stress field in magnitude and direction; photographs of patterns are included.
