Hydrodynamics of open hearth baths
There is optimum rate of oxidation of carbon for any given bath depth to ensure best conditions for deep mixing; any further increase in rate of decarbonization must adversely affect mixing of lower regions of metal; to accelerate this process in deep baths, they must be injected with oxygen or air; when additional gas bubbles are introduced into lower regions of bath, mixing of metal is intensified. (see also English translation in Stal in English n 7 July 1964 p 525-6)
