Effect of non-metallic coatings on fretting corrosion of mild steel
Fretting fatigue behaviour of Parco-Lubrite and Bonderite 875 phosphate coatings and sulfidenitride coating (Sulfinuz) on mild steel were investigated; both phosphate coatings have adverse effect because they reduce fatigue strength of steel, giving resultant fretting fatigue limit of 30,000 compared with 67,000 cycles for untreated steel; impregnation of phosphate coatings with suitable oil-in-water emulsion raised fretting fatigue limit to 174,000 cycles in case of Parco-Lubrite coating and 125,000 cycles in case of Bonderite 875 coating; Sulfinuz coating gave greatest improvement with fretting fatigue limit of 350,000.
