Welded steel frames world's largest clear-span domed stadium
Harris County Sport Stadium in Houston, Tex is circular structure with dome diameter of 641 ft 8 in. and floor-to-ceiling height of 213 ft; more than 9000 tons of steel were welded to form stadium's supporting framework, dome, and movable stands; nearly third of this steel went into lamella dome; dome will support live load of 15 psf, plus 30 psf dead load; it is also designed to withstand windload of 40 psf; key to success of roof structure is welded tension ring at its circumference.
