Prestressed anchorage for large tainter gate
Unusually large 50-ft wide by 65-ft high tainter gates of spillway of Wanapum Dam on Columbia River led to search for economical way of anchoring 7560 kips of thrust into pier; heavily reinforced concrete block supporting gate trunnions and anchored with 14 prestressed cables, each of 635 kip capacity, provided answer; extensive structural model tests were conducted to study complicated three dimensional state of stress inside anchor block and monolithic construction with pier.
