Cohesion in undisturbed sensitive clay
True cohesion of undisturbed, sensitive clay was measured by compression testing of laboratory specimens at very low effective stresses; measured cohesion may be visualized as frictional resistance mobilized by arrangement of, and intrinsic stresses between, individual soil particles; this concept is considered to lead to better fundamental understanding of strength of undisturbed clay; extrapolation of strength theories developed for remolded clays to assessment of undisturbed, sensitive clays is refuted.
