Hyperconcentrations of suspended sediment
Occurrence of extremely high suspended-sediment concentrations of several streams in semiarid southwestern United States was studied; data are presented from files of U S Geological Survey for 44 streamflow samples that exceed 40% sediment by weights; various aspects of high concentrations are examined, including particle-size distributions, clay-fraction mineralogical analyses, sediment volume-concentration relation, and suspension mechanism.
