Compact drill bores shafts for caissons
Sinking of caisson shafts for wall-plate underpinning of San Francisco Caldecott Tunnel with unusual hydraulic drill named Crab is described; hydraulic rig crawled into 5×8-ft slots to dig out 24-in. diam, 10-ft deep shafts; 100-hp electric motor powered hydraulic system and 10-ton drill sank 10-ft shaft in average time of 45 min.
