Niigata earthquake, Japan 1.02 P.M. 16 June 1964
Survey of kinds and extent of damage following Niigata earthquake showed that direct structural damage was absent, but severe damage occurred in areas of poor soil conditions, consequent upon foundation failure, ground fractures and liquifaction of soft sand; high sea level, due to tsunami causing backflowing of Shinano river, resulted in extensive flooding; surface soil at Niigata is mainly sand and silt; in damage area, buildings with basement story, in general, suffered less damage than those without basements; buildings on piles behaved better than those without piles.
