A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Design and construction of straight concrete gravity dam built on sandstone foundations across Warragamba River about 40 mi west of Sydney, Australia; maximum height of concrete is 450 ft, volume of concrete 1,610,000 cu yd, length of crest 1150 ft, maximum depth of stored water 340 ft, and capacity of storage basin 1,665,000 acre-ft; special features described include intensive geological and engineering investigation of dam site, sandstone foundation in which rock had Young's modulus of only about 500,000 psi, provision for floods, and provision of 50 Mw hydroelectric unit for use when surplus water was available.
