Shek Pik Scheme for water supply of Hong Kong is outlined and construction of 180 ft high earthfill dam is described; reference is made to difficulties with some of fill material, necessitating certain design changes during construction; data collected during control of construction are presented, together with information obtained during first partial filling of reservoir; differential settlement of foundations has caused cracking in core of dam; investigation was made of extent of cracking and results obtained are described, together with remedial measures being undertaken; details of site testing of earthfill and costs of work are presented.
