Theory of shells is applied to statical analysis of arch dam; system of partial differential equations is derived for three components of displacement vector; under certain simplifying assumptions, partial differential equation for normal displacement is reduced to single ordinary differential equation; allowance is made for vertical curvature and torsional rigidity; results of approximate method presented agree with results of measurements performed on dam model. (See also 355 June 1964 p 598-602)
