Underground cavities subjected to intense ground shocks
Model experiments, utilizing blocks made from plaster of paris and other plasters, were conducted to determine manner in which underground cavities fail when subjected to remote, intense, highly localized, transient impulsive loading; 200 tests were run with 9-g explosive charges detonated on surface of 8 in. cubical blocks in which cavities were precast; radial fracturing, single spall formation, multiple spalling, and plugging by shear were most important forms of failure observed.
