USGS relates geologic structures to bumps and deformation in coal mine workings
Geological observations in Sunnyside No. 1 mine, Utah, may provide insight into proper design of roof supports; detailed mapping of deformational features in mine has led to conclusion that many of features observed in ribs, floor and roof resulted from tensional stresses; tensional features, however, are superficial, and most of them resulted from relaxation of compressive stress on surfaces of openings; analysis of lateral creep of coal and horizontal shear along bedding planes.
