First prestressed steel bridge in United States is 240×30 ft 3-span continuous I-Beam bridge over Silver Creek on U S Highway 6 in Pottawat-tamie County, Iowa; beams are prestressed by means of high strength steel cover plates with appreciable steel saving; during design stage of bridge, 2 prototype beams were fabricated in order to test practicability of procedures from shop standpoint, reconcile theoretical analysis with actual results, and finally to test load deflection characteristics of beams; results analyzed.
