Brittle fracture of alloy steel bridge
King Street Bridge is all-welded steel girder structure across River Yarra at Melbourne; on July 10 1962 span collapsed under load of semi-trailer vehicle with total weight of 47 tons; span was made up of 4 100-ft long suspended girders, and each girder fractured at point 16 ft from southern end; additionally, 3 fractured 16 ft from northern end; cause of failure is given as brittle fracture at point on each girder where change in flange section occurs; 2 repair schemes have been suggested.
