Detroit's avant garde expressway lighting
New extension of John C.Lodge Freeway in Detroit is lighted to 1 ft-c by mercury luminaires mounted approximately 45 ft over pavement; footcandle uniformity ratio is 1.5 to 1; brightness ratio, 1.3 to 1; these close ratios are possible only with high mounting heights; almost glareless underpass lighting at Southfield Freeway is achieved by fluorescent luminaires mounted between beams in bridge steel work; luminaires are 2-lamp 48-w fluorescent; lighting level is 5 ft-c; photographs.
