Cold probes stabilize bank
To halt erosion during spring floods, 40-ft long thermopiles were installed along 300-ft section of Yukon River's bank near Galena Air Force Station, Alaska; thermopiles were fabricated of 3-in. diam steel pipe and filled with propane gas to bleed heat from already-frozen ground; placing of 54 probes in subzero weather is described.
