Field tests for determining permeability of soil strata
Subject is approached from civil engineering point of view; knowledge of coefficient of permeability is needed in design of dams on permeable foundations and for construction purposes when area has to be dewatered inside cofferdams or in excavation, and in many grouting problems; borehole, pressure dissipation and grain size tests, seasonal variation in groundwater levels and pumping tests are compared by reference to work done on actual sites, in particular one involving design and construction problems for dam on pervious foundation; coefficients of permeability estimated by various techniques are in reasonable agreement.
