Subsidence resulting from consolidation of near-surface deposits in certain areas of San Joaquin Valley, Calif results chiefly from consolidation of certain moisture-deficient deposits; when water percolates through deposits for first time it weakens clay bond supporting voids, and overburden compacts deposits; to study consolidation characteristics, dry, undisturbed specimens of clayey sand were placed in consolidometer, simulated overburden load was applied and water allowed to percolate through samples; paraffin was used to help fit sample into ring, and water was applied after loading instead of before, as in standard test.
