A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Scott tunnel excavation is being used to drive section 2 of Chicago's northwest interceptor sewer; machine makes bore 25 ft 6 in. diam, advancing 3 ft in 30 min, then moved ahead for next shove; excavator is powered by 300 hp of electric motors operating at 120 cycle, and consists of wheel with 8 heavy spokes to which carbide teeth are attached; work is being conducted under air pressure of 4 to 8 psi for added support to roof and face.
