Results of measurement of dimensional- and temperature-changes occurring at depths of up to 5 ft in masses of 3 concrete dams, are presented; measurements were made by means of elastic wire strainmeters embedded in concrete; rational method of calculating effects of restraint by mass concrete is deduced; application to design of reinforcement at junctures of massive concrete with light structural frames where temperature variations are significant.
