Friction and cohesion of saturated clays
Friction and cohesion of saturated clays were studied experimentally to determine influence of clay structure and method of loading; in remolded clay, cohesion dissipates with time when soil is subjected to either constant stress (creep test) or constant strain (relaxation test); in case of constant-stress test, progressive reduction in cohesion is accompanied by increase in frictional resistance; cohesion in flocculated clay does not dissipate in creep or relaxation tests until stresses close to ultimate strength are attained.
