First welded aluminum girder bridge spans interstate highway in Iowa
36 ft wide bridge has four continuous spans of 41.25 ft, 68.75 ft, 68. 75 ft and 41.25 ft; 8 in. concrete deck is supported by four lines of girders spaced 9.5 ft on centers; structural members are entirely of flat-plate, non-heat-treatable aluminum alloys assembled by special welding techniques; high strength aluminum bolts were used for field erection; only 76,850 lb of material was required.
