To make room for St. Lawrence Seaway Channel, which requires 120 ft of clearance for ocean shipping to pass beneath bridge, 250-ft span of Jacques Cartier bridge was rolled out of place and new span of different construction rolled in to replace it; span was raised 80 ft and of this amount 50 ft was accomplished by means of vertical jacking.
