Studies and results reported were limited to granular materials subjected to step shock loadings in which lateral confinement was generated by applied axial over-pressure; study was carried out to demonstrate quantitative relationship between measured peak particle displacement and displacement predicted from measured velocity of front of main stress wave to indicate influence of initial stress, or initial effective confining pressures, on overpressure-strain relationship; close relationship is indicated between precursor wave velocities measured at URS Corp, Burlingame, Calif and Herzian or "seismic" velocities measured in same material at M.I.T.
