A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
By assuming coarser layer of graded filter to be uniform, formula expressing risk of piping is derived as function of thickness and area of finer layer, and of diameter and percentage of its coarse grains; formula contains factor whose dependence on pore size of coarser layer and perhaps also on other variables must be studied in tests with percolating water; application of new formula to practical example shows that selection of layer thickness according to present practice entails great risk of piping.
