Low modulus pavement on elastic foundation
Westergaard theory for plate on "heavy liquid foundation" was applied to analysis of stresses and deflections in asphalt-bound layer(s) of flexible pavement system; computer program was developed to give solution for symmetrical loading case; plots of bending stresses, shear stresses and vertical deflection vs pavement thickness were made to determine influence of various parameters involved in analysis; it was found that bending and shear stresses depend on ratio of pavement stiffness to support stiffness, while deflection is determined by stiffness ratio and magnitude of modulus of support reaction.
