Shells of revolution with concentrated edge forces
When concentrated force is applied to shell structure, stress field results which may be regarded as being caused by propagation of effects of localized disturbance into shell; theoretical approach developed for second-order shells of revolution is based on quasi-cylindrical approximation; examples are worked out which show that cylinders and hyperboloids of revolution possess directions along which stresses tend to propagate preferentially, while shells of positive gaussian curvature do not have this property; comparison is made between theoretical and experimental results of other authors.
