Discharge facilities at Hells Canyon dam
Design of dam on Snake River for Idaho Power Co; feature arrangements in fitting diversion, power and spillway facilities within deep narrow gorge are described; dam is straight concrete gravity structure; diversion tunnel is concrete lined and has 40-ft diam horseshoe section, 1700 ft long to handle 60,000 cfs; three-unit power plant with 391,500 kw capacity is notched into left abutment rock and overlaps toe of dam; energy of 300,000 cfs discharge over center section spillway is dissipated by combination of concrete nappe deflectors and submerged roller bucket; fish trapping facilities consist of aluminum barge floating in tailrace.
