Proposed method of analysis consists in studying conditions of three-dimensional equilibrium of tetrahedral rock volume limited by three geological planes of separation; applied forces are dead weight, pore water pressure, dam thrust, forces due to seismic acceleration, and prestressing forces; examples given show how physical conditions governing stability of dam abutment can be estimated, and how safety can be improved by suitable grouting and drainage treatment.
