Carters dam brings new tunneling angle
Construction and features of rock-fill dam that rises 445 ft above Georgia's Coosawattee River, with dropping penstocks; four slanted penstock tunnels with rough bores of 23 ft and lined diameters of 18 ft serve two conventional and two reversible 125,000-kw generating units; tunnels pierce mountain flank that forms dam's right abutment, slanting up from tailwater to headrace; they rise about 340 ft over their 850 ft length; dam has 2050 ft crest length and stepped up generating capacity from 104,000 kw to 500,000 kw.
