Response of earth dams to traveling seismic waves
Finite element method is extended and general theory is developed to account for spacial variations of earthquake ground motion along dam base; causes of spacial variations in ground motion; method is demonstrated by considering horizontal component of Taft earthquake traveling across base of simple triangular cross section of dam at assumed propagation velocity; results of analysis with different propagation velocities are presented and compared with those obtained for uniform base motion; relative differences between rigid base and traveling wave solutions are established.
