New laboratory methods of studying mechanical properties of rocks
Behavior of dam abutments depends closely on their discontinuous character; direct large-scale investigation of global effect of major discontinuities on strength is generally beyond facilities of man and only dam itself can stress rock mass on large scale; studies on laboratory scale can, however, be rewarding in determining parameters of fracture system; methods, apparatus for investigation of stratification joints, fissures and shear fractures as well as permeability and shear strength are described.
