Earthwork quantities by random sampling
Statistical methods are applied to determine earthwork quantities; cut and fill areas are delineated and planimetered; table of random numbers is used to locate sample items of depths of earthwork; volume of earthwork is product of planimetered area and weighted average of sampled depths; precision of answer is expressed as function of confidence limit, average depth, contour interval, and number of sample items; distribution of cut and fill areas can be determined from sample items used to find depth of earthwork.
