    British Mining Research Establishment has studied for several years behavior of rock around underground excavations; remote roof extensometer was developed; its function is to measure lateral strains developed short distances into lower roof strata of face or roadway; paper describes instrument and its initial underground trial; it has been ascertained that instrument is capable of measuring strains at distance up to 0.9 m (3 ft) into roof; errors in measurement were negligible compared with range of over 2000 mμ in tension or compression that instrument can measure.
