Need for inexpensive, rapid and more meaningful clay testing procedures is pointed out; literature relating to determination of specific surface and cation-exchange capacity and possible application to clay evaluation is reviewed; methylene blue adsorption clay cation-exchange capacity was plotted against specific surface data, dry modulus of rupture for extruded and cast clayflint specimens and for neat clay cast specimens; excellent straight line relations were found that can be used as rapid means of estimating specific surface and dry modulus of clays.
