Cities and urban regions are systems -- Urban Systems -- and they must be optimized; methodology of Systems Analysis has been used to help in task; of several subsystems of Urban System, only land use and transportation have received attention for application of systems approach; simplified model of land use and transportation in Urban Systems is presented in graphical form and shown to be operational within context of existing knowledge of systems and cities; key to future success lies in formulation of interdisciplinary teams drawn from natural and social sciences to jointly plan for Urban Systems.
