Illustrated report on leakage of earth embankment of Lee Valley dam of London water supply; investigations revealed that claycore wall of embankment shrank and cracked when, at beginning of war, water level was lowered as precautionary measure; importance of maintenance of conditions favorable to this type of dam and of use of clay with low potential shrinkage is stressed. (See also - discussion n 605 July p 373-381; Surveyor v 105 n 2832 May 3 1946 p 343-6; Pub Works v 77 n 7 July 1946 p 19-20, 34)
