To conform to California's laws on earthquake resistant construction, it was necessary to provide for horizontal forces in three-story addition placed on top of Los Angeles building not designed for earthquake forces; addition was anchored with horizontal ties to adjacent building designed to resist horizontal forces, while roller bearings transmit only vertical loads to old building below.
