Large crude-oil storage tanks in high tensile steel
Special attention was paid to requirements of notch ductility and weldability of steel used in construction of 100,000 cu m floating roof storage tanks in Shell's Europoort terminal west of Rotterdam; also various design details were examined to minimize stress concentrations; horizontal and vertical joints were welded automatically; allowable stress of two-thirds of minimum yield point for this steel was adopted; wind tunnel tests were made on tank models to investigate stability of relatively thinner tank shell.
