Method of applying arch theory to direct calculation, not only in case of freely supported, but also of fixed end conditions, outlined and illustrated; in addition to effects due to vertical loading, those due to horizontal (wind) loading acting longitudinally on arch, are also evaluated; this effect is not present in bridge work and therefore its treatment has generally been ignored. (See also - n 6 June 1937 p 339-54)
