Functional planning of bulk material ports
It is emphasized that new concepts in material handling methods and equipment make it essential for terminal planner to consider operational procedures to avoid premature obsolescence of port facilities; unconventional terminal design based on functional approach is shown to offer solutions not otherwise economically feasible; unit train concept in cargo handling is considered; examples are given for terminal planner to provide for optimum transshipment facilities so as not to negate savings in transportation costs.
