Batter-pile tension retains earth walls
Pretensioned steel batter piles were used to tie back shoring system of 40-ft deep excavation that was developed for foundation work on 43-story Wells Fargo Bank Building, San Francisco, Calif; work site had to be kept clear for pile-driving operations; hole was lined with soldier piles and wood lags, then steel batter piles were driven between soldiers at three levels, their tips grouted against pullout, and tensioned to tie-back steel walers.
