Effect of shaft friction on carrying capacity of base of pile or foundation
Tests were conducted to investigate settlement characteristics of base affected by load carried by shaft; test bases were of 4 or 6 in. diam and were flat, hemispherical or conical with 90° apex angle; shaft of pile consisted of thin-walled hollow steel tube of slightly greater internal diameter than diameter of base; tests were carried out with pile embedded in 8×4×4 ft deep bin of open graded sand; model piles were embedded to various depths up to two feet, leaving another two feet of sand beneath base.
